Dr. Fatima Azi Waziri, Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has raised alarm over human traffickers exploiting the so-called “Japa Syndrome,” a trend among Nigerians seeking to leave the country due to poor socio-economic conditions.

Speaking at a town hall meeting on Monday, July 29, 2024, to mark the beginning of activities for the 2024 World Day Against Trafficking, Dr. Waziri revealed that traffickers are capitalizing on individuals’ desperation to escape Nigeria. They are presenting themselves as agents who can facilitate a smooth exit process, thereby deceiving and exploiting vulnerable individuals.

“The new trend for many young Nigerians is to ‘japa’ and traffickers are taking advantage of it, posing as agents that can help offer a seamless process,” Dr. Waziri explained.

She emphasized the need to tackle the root causes of trafficking, including poverty and unemployment. “We understand that as long as we don’t address poverty, unemployment, and other socio-economic factors, we will continue to face these challenges,” she said.

Dr. Waziri urged Nigerians to be cautious and diligent when approached by individuals offering promises of a better life abroad. She stressed the importance of vigilance and thorough questioning to avoid falling victim to trafficking schemes.

NAPTIP remains dedicated to raising awareness about trafficking methods and prevention strategies to protect potential victims from being deceived by traffickers.
