Abiru’s 50 solar lights win praise in GRA 1 Ikorodu

Residents declare September a “month of illumination” as the intervention transforms the estate, while the community awaits action on its 1.2km road

The Executive Committee of GRA 1 Community Development Association in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has expressed appreciation to Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, following the installation of 50 industrial solar-powered street lights across the community, with the Exco describing September 2026 as the estate’s “month of illumination”.

For residents, the intervention represents more than a change in the appearance of their neighbourhood after sunset. The CDA said the community had endured years of inadequate street lighting, leaving sections of the estate in what residents described as partial darkness.

The situation had previously prompted the Executive Committee to introduce a community-led initiative under which individual households were encouraged to illuminate the portions of the streets around their properties.

Residents consequently had to dig into their own pockets to provide outdoor lighting, creating pockets of illumination across the estate while the community continued to seek a more sustainable solution.

The arrival of the 50 industrial solar-powered street lights has now significantly changed that experience, according to the CDA, providing broader illumination and transforming the outlook and perception of the neighbourhood.

“For years we lived in partial darkness and have had to dig deep to do the little we could on our own, but today, 50 industrial solar street lights have changed our story,” the Executive Committee said.

The significance of the intervention extends beyond the residents of GRA 1 because of the estate’s strategic location within Ikorodu.

Abiru’s campaign office and the Independent National Electoral Commission zonal office are both direct neighbours of GRA 1, while the estate also borders the Ikorodu General Hospital.

The improved illumination therefore has implications beyond individual homes, benefiting residents and visitors as well as people accessing the surrounding public and political facilities, particularly after sunset.

While welcoming the solar-powered street lights, however, the CDA said its main and initial request was the total rehabilitation of the estate’s 1.2-kilometre road.

The road remains a priority for the community, with residents hopeful that the lighting intervention will be followed by the comprehensive rehabilitation they had originally sought.

For the CDA, the 50 solar lights therefore represent a significant step towards improving the estate rather than the conclusion of its infrastructure aspirations. Combining the new lighting with a rehabilitated road, the association believes, would deliver a more comprehensive transformation of the neighbourhood.

The development adds to a series of solar lighting and electricity interventions associated with Abiru across Ikorodu and other parts of Lagos East.

In September 2024, solar street lights facilitated by the senator illuminated sections of TOS Benson Avenue in Ikorodu, from around Malok Filling Station towards the Ebute-Iga axis. Earlier interventions were also recorded at Aga, Gbasemo and Sholebo Estate Road.

Abiru’s project records also include solar-powered street lighting at Olayinka Jimbo and adjoining streets in Ebute, Ajelogo in Mile 12 and 200 units at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology in Ikorodu.

His wider infrastructure interventions across Lagos East have included roads, transformers, health facilities, schools, water projects and other community initiatives.

Abiru has previously said his approach to infrastructure development is shaped by engagement with communities and the identification of projects capable of addressing their priority needs.

During an inspection of infrastructure projects across Lagos East in September 2025, the senator said such interventions were intended to improve living conditions and create opportunities for economic activity.

“They are about easing the burden of residents, opening up communities for economic prosperity, and ensuring that our people enjoy the dignity of living in decent environments,” Abiru said.

The latest intervention comes as the senator continues to pursue infrastructure projects across the 16 local government and local council development areas that constitute Lagos East Senatorial District.

In June 2026, a 504-kilowatt interconnected mini-grid facilitated in Epe through collaboration involving Abiru, the Rural Electrification Agency, the European Union and German development agency GIZ was commissioned, alongside the groundbreaking for a planned 5-megawatt expansion.

His office has also continued oversight of the reconstruction of the 34-kilometre Ikorodu-Itoikin Road, another major federal infrastructure project serving the eastern axis of Lagos State.

Against those larger interventions, the impact of the GRA 1 project is distinctly local and immediately visible.

Streets that residents had previously attempted to illuminate through individual household efforts now benefit from a coordinated solar-powered lighting system, improving visibility for pedestrians and motorists and giving the neighbourhood a noticeably different appearance after dark.

The Executive Committee, elders and residents said the intervention had added value to the estate and brought a greater sense of security to a community that had struggled with inadequate lighting for years.

The community also acknowledged that sustaining the benefits of the project will require residents to protect the infrastructure and guard against vandalism, a recurring challenge confronting public facilities in many communities.

Yet, even as GRA 1 celebrates what it has called its month of illumination, attention remains on the outstanding 1.2-kilometre estate road.

For residents, the 50 solar lights have provided a remarkable beginning. Completing the road rehabilitation they initially requested would, they believe, complete a much bigger transformation of the estate.
