The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s 64th Independence Day speech, accusing him of making false claims of achievements while ignoring Nigeria’s current struggles.

The opposition party expressed disappointment, stating that Tinubu’s address failed to acknowledge the nation’s pressing economic challenges, including unemployment, poverty, and rising fuel prices.

In his national broadcast, Tinubu emphasised the need for reform, warning that without changes, Nigeria could face collapse.

He claimed that his administration had attracted over $30bn in foreign direct investment and was prioritising political and economic reforms.

However, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the speech as “a complete waste of time,” criticising it for being out of touch with the realities faced by Nigerians.

The PDP argued that Tinubu’s speech was filled with false performance claims, failing to address the growing economic hardship and insecurity in the country.

The PDP also suggested that the President visit markets and interact with citizens to gain a better understanding of the difficulties they face, rather than relying on statistics provided by officials.

They warned that the APC-led government was eroding electoral credibility and democratic rights.

In response, the APC dismissed the PDP’s claims, with its Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, stating that the opposition’s reaction was rooted in frustration.

He argued that the APC government had restored peace and sanity to Nigeria, criticising the PDP for failing to achieve what the APC had accomplished since taking power.
