The Enugu State Ministry of Health confirms 10 deaths from a cholera outbreak, urging public adherence to hygiene practices.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Enugu State Ministry of Health has confirmed that a recent cholera outbreak has resulted in the tragic deaths of ten individuals.
In a letter addressed to the Guild of Medical Directors, Dr Egwuonwu Samuel, Director of Medical Services, conveyed this alarming news on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi.

The outbreak has raised significant concerns among health officials as they mobilise efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
The ministry has reported multiple cases of cholera, prompting immediate action from health authorities and partners to mitigate further transmission.
“Health facilities and personnel are advised to stay alert for symptoms like acute diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting,” Dr. Egwuonwu stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
As part of the response, the ministry is urging the immediate implementation of heightened Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures across all medical facilities.
Dr. Egwuonwu emphasised the necessity of these protocols, saying, “We are calling for the immediate implementation of heightened Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures in all medical facilities to stop the spread.”
He further urged medical practitioners to exercise heightened vigilance and report any suspected cases promptly.
Cholera poses a significant public health threat, primarily transmitted through contaminated water or food. The ministry’s rapid response is crucial to protecting the public and curbing the outbreak.
“This outbreak poses a significant public health threat, as cholera is a highly contagious disease,” Dr. Egwuonwu remarked, highlighting the critical nature of the health response.
In addition to actions taken by health officials, the ministry is appealing to the public to adhere to strict hygiene practices.
These include boiling water before consumption, frequent hand washing, and avoiding poorly handled food. Dr. Egwuonwu reassured the community that the Enugu State government will provide further guidelines and updates as the situation evolves.
Efforts are ongoing in collaboration with both local and international health partners to effectively manage and mitigate the outbreak.
