Former anti-graft chief Baltasar Engonga is remanded in prison after sex tapes surface, sparking a major scandal in Equatorial Guinea.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]altasar Engonga, the former Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) in Equatorial Guinea, has been remanded in Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison following his arrest in connection with a sex tape scandal.

The 54-year-old economist, who was once at the helm of the country’s anti-corruption efforts, is facing a slew of charges including corruption, embezzlement, and inappropriate conduct in office.

The scandal, which has sent shockwaves through the country, came to light during a fraud investigation into Engonga.

Authorities reportedly discovered over 400 sex tapes, featuring prominent figures’ wives in the country, during an impromptu search of his home and office.

The tapes, which allegedly showed Engonga in sexual encounters with these women, were said to have been recorded without their consent.

Several CDs containing the footage were seized by ANIF officials, who later confirmed that the tapes had leaked online, leading to widespread media outrage.

The video leak prompted swift action from Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who dismissed Engonga from his post on November 6, 2024.

In a decree published shortly thereafter, President Mbasogo cited “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions” as well as “inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties” as the reasons behind Engonga’s dismissal.

While Engonga was initially taken into custody on charges of embezzling public funds, the sex tapes began to circulate across social media, amplifying the scandal.

A viral video from Friday, November 8, 2024, showed Engonga handcuffed and shackled during a court appearance, further fueling the controversy.

French online blog Afrikmatin confirmed that Engonga had been transferred to Malabo Central Prison following his dismissal.

Local media reports have also revealed that the authorities are investigating further, with more officials reportedly suspended or scrutinised in the wake of the scandal.

According to a report by UGStandard, Engonga’s arrest and the sex tape revelations have prompted the government to take stricter measures, including surveillance installations in government offices.

The scandal has also led to increased restrictions on social media platforms, including WhatsApp, in an effort to curb the spread of the videos.
