The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a massive counterfeit rice operation, seizing over 1,600 bags of fake rice worth approximately ₦5 billion.

In a major crackdown, the agency shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, as well as raided Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja.

The operation, led under the directive of NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, is part of the agency’s efforts to protect public health during the festive season. The counterfeit rice, discovered in branded bags such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, was being repackaged to deceive unsuspecting consumers.

At the Karu facility, NAFDAC officials also discovered empty bags bearing the names of popular rice brands, indicating the scale of the counterfeiting scheme.

Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s Director for the Federal Capital Territory, issued a stern warning to counterfeiters, urging them to desist or face strict legal actions. He confirmed that suspects apprehended during the raid would be prosecuted to deter further fraudulent activities in the food sector.

The agency has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of food products, especially during the festive period when consumer demand is at its peak.
