The Federal Government addresses Emir Sanusi’s remarks on Nigeria’s economic reforms, urging unity and collaboration for national progress

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Federal Government has responded to recent remarks made by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the economic reforms implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at a public event in Lagos, the emir acknowledged the necessity of the reforms but expressed reluctance to advocate for them, citing personal reasons.

Acknowledging Emir Sanusi’s right to express his views, the government expressed surprise at his admission of withholding support due to perceived antagonism.

This position, the government noted, contradicts the values of forthrightness and justice traditionally upheld by the emir’s institution.

The government reiterated that Nigeria is at a critical juncture requiring bold and decisive actions to address longstanding economic challenges.

The reforms, although initially painful, are essential for stabilising and revitalising the nation’s economy.

The administration highlighted significant progress already achieved, including the unification of exchange rates, which has boosted investor confidence and strengthened foreign reserves.

Other key achievements cited include the removal of fuel subsidies, which has freed resources for infrastructure, education, and healthcare investments.

Projections from global institutions such as the World Bank indicate an upward trajectory in Nigeria’s GDP, affirming the long-term benefits of the reforms. Additionally, the country has improved its debt service-to-revenue ratio, creating a more sustainable fiscal outlook.

The government expressed disappointment that Emir Sanusi, despite his extensive background in economics, would critique reforms he has previously supported.

The administration called on the emir to rise above personal grievances and work collaboratively to support efforts aimed at national development.

Emphasising the need for unity, the government urged leaders to refrain from divisive rhetoric that undermines public trust.

Instead, they should champion policies designed to create a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to fostering economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, while maintaining openness to constructive dialogue with stakeholders.

The Federal Government concluded by calling on Nigerians to prioritise national interest over personal gain.

According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the collective efforts of leaders and citizens will be instrumental in achieving the administration’s vision of renewed hope and a better future for all.
