Presidents Putin and Xi strengthen Russia-China ties, promising mutual support, as Trump threatens heavy tariffs on Beijing and Moscow over Ukraine

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ussian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed their deepening bilateral relations in a video call on Tuesday, just hours after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

This conversation came amid rising tensions as Trump made it clear that he would adopt a firm stance against Russia and China, vowing to impose heavy tariffs on Beijing and warning Moscow of “big trouble” if it does not resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Putin, addressing Xi as his “dear friend,” underscored the growing friendship and mutual support between the two nations, despite external pressures from the international community.

“Russia and China’s joint work plays an important stabilising role in international affairs,” Putin remarked, emphasising the importance of their continued cooperation.

Xi, in turn, expressed his desire to elevate the relationship between China and Russia to “new heights” in the coming year.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi stated that both countries should continue to deepen their strategic coordination and resolutely support each other in safeguarding their legitimate interests.

“The two sides should continue to deepen strategic coordination, resolutely support each other, and safeguard the legitimate interests of both countries,” Xi added, also highlighting the importance of expanding bilateral relations and driving practical cooperation to even deeper levels.

Moscow and Beijing have strengthened military and trade ties, particularly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has drawn international condemnation.

This alignment between Russia and China has raised alarm in the United States, which views both nations as adversaries in global politics.

Despite this, China has portrayed itself as a neutral player in the Ukraine conflict, calling for peaceful resolution while maintaining close economic and political ties with Russia.

Beijing has not condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, leading some NATO members to label China as an “enabler” of the conflict.

Putin and Xi have often highlighted their strong personal rapport, with Xi referring to Putin as his “best friend” and Putin calling Xi a “reliable partner.”

This personal connection has played a crucial role in solidifying their countries’ diplomatic ties.
