The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, has left the university community in shock. As of Monday, the student’s body had yet to be recovered, and his identity remains unknown.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the victim had placed a bet with some friends, challenging himself to swim across the river.

Witnesses claim several students contributed N300 each for the wager. Unfortunately, while attempting the swim, the student disappeared beneath the water’s surface and has not been seen since.

“Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river, “They all raised N300 for the stake. As he was swimming, he dipped and hasn’t been seen since.”

Efforts to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms Mercy Ekott, for comments were unsuccessful, as calls to her mobile phone went unanswered.

Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Musa Mohammed, also stated he had not yet been briefed on the incident.

“I have no information on the incident,” he said, adding that he would provide updates once more details became available.
