Lawal, a professional player for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on the morning of Monday, 24th February 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and signed by its spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Commission Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.

She described the incident as both “pathetic and suspicious” and insisted on a thorough and transparent investigation.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has already demanded a complete autopsy and a detailed inquiry into the events leading to Lawal’s fall.

According to preliminary reports from Ugandan authorities, Lawal had visited the shopping mall to meet his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who had been staying in Room 416 since 20th February 2025.

Naima reportedly left Lawal preparing tea in the room while she went to a nearby game centre.

Shortly afterward, around 8:00 am, Lawal was said to have fallen from the balcony. Despite being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police recovered several of Lawal’s personal belongings, including two smartphones, open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, all found in his black backpack.

Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews as part of their efforts to determine the cause of the incident.

The Nigerian government has pledged to monitor the investigation closely, ensuring no cover-up and demanding justice if any foul play is uncovered.

Dabiri-Erewa also extended heartfelt condolences to Lawal’s family, saying, “May his soul Rest in Peace, and may God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”

As investigations continue, authorities in both countries are under pressure to deliver a transparent and detailed report on the tragic death of the 24-year-old footballer.
