Lagos Green Line rail project

Lagos unveils plan to complete full 68km Green Line rail in one phase, signalling a bold shift in urban transit development strategy

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n a bold move to overhaul urban transit, the Lagos State Government has announced that the entire 68-kilometre Green Line rail project will be completed in a single phase marking a strategic departure from the phased approach used in earlier metro developments such as the Blue and Red Lines.

Stretching from Marina to the Lekki Free Zone, the Green Line is expected to revolutionise public transportation across the city by reducing reliance on private vehicles and significantly improving mobility.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has now unveiled the full alignment of the ambitious rail project.

The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, confirmed that the government is determined to deliver the complete stretch of the project in one go.

This approach, unlike the segmented implementation of previous lines, is aimed at fast-tracking project delivery and maximising its benefits upon launch.

LAMATA also disclosed that a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is currently underway.

Although the full alignment has been revealed, specific route details have not yet been made public. Alongside the ESIA, a Resettlement Policy Framework is being developed to identify and mitigate any potential impacts on communities and the environment.

To support the initiative, the Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which will spearhead the construction of the project.

This international partnership highlights Lagos’ commitment to attracting global expertise for infrastructure delivery.

Property owners along the proposed corridor have been urged to regularise their building approvals in preparation for construction, helping to minimise potential disruptions during the build phase.

Once completed, the Green Line is expected to significantly enhance Lagos’ transportation infrastructure. It is seen as a crucial step in supporting the state’s broader vision for a more efficient, accessible, and liveable urban environment in the face of rapid population growth.

The project reflects the government’s sustained efforts to integrate sustainability, planning, and innovation into its urban development agenda.
