In a major political shakeup, three Kebbi senators and numerous other PDP leaders across Nigeria have defected to the APC, signalling a growing wave of support for the ruling party

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he political landscape in Nigeria has shifted significantly as three senators from Kebbi State Alhaji Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Alhaji Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) prepare to formally defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the floor of the Senate this Tuesday.

Their decision marks another blow to the PDP’s already shrinking support base and reflects a broader realignment underway across Nigeria’s political spectrum.

The trio met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, accompanied by APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu, and several other senior officials. Dr. Ganduje confirmed the President’s endorsement of their defection and assured a “smooth integration” into the party’s ranks.

“This is in continuation of the initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that the APC must do what it must do democratically to increase our numerical strength,” said Ganduje.

This is not just about numbers it’s about quality and capacity. The APC is growing stronger, and Nigerians are recognising effective leadership,

The APC has also welcomed Minority Leader of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Yahaya Zakari, alongside hundreds of PDP members from Gwaram and Guri LGAs, as well as defectors from Delta and Edo States, including six federal lawmakers, 18 local government chairmen, and 192 councillors.

Former Kano South Senator Kawu Sumaila and Onyebuchi Ememanka, the former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, have also left their parties NNPP and PDP respectively to align with the APC.

Ganduje dismissed fears of a looming one-party state, noting that the defections were driven by the APC’s governance record and inclusive leadership style.

“A one-party state is not by force; it is by negotiation. If Nigerians willingly align with the APC, that reflects our growing appeal,” he said.
