The attacker was also found dead at the scene, in what police believe to be an apparent suicide.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in the north of Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, unfolded around 10 a.m. local time.

Police, including specially trained COBRA units – Austria’s equivalent of a SWAT team – and a police helicopter, swiftly responded to reports of gunfire.

Officers have since begun gathering evidence in what is being described as potentially the worst school shooting in Europe in years.

Among the deceased are several students and at least one adult, according to remarks from Graz’s mayor, Elke Kahr, reported by the Austria Press Agency. Mayor Kahr confirmed that the shooter was also among the dead.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker addressed the nation’s profound shock in a social media post, stating, “The shooting rampage at a school in Graz is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our entire country.”

Both Mr. Stocker and the Interior Minister were reported to be travelling to Graz to assess the situation.

The school was fully evacuated before noon, and a stadium approximately a mile away was opened as a safe gathering point for students and their anxious parents.

Graz, a vibrant and wealthy university town, is no stranger to mass attacks, having experienced a major incident a decade ago where a man killed three people and wounded dozens by driving into crowds and then attacking bystanders with a knife.

This latest Graz School Shooting has reignited national conversations around public safety and gun violence.
