Tinubu self-naming spree raises eyebrows as critics warn legacy may not endure

Tinubu self-naming spree

Fisayo Soyombo criticises President Bola Tinubu’s self-naming spree, warning that legacy is earned through service, not buildings, and may be easily reversed by future leaders

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]nvestigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has raised fresh concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s increasing tendency to name public buildings and institutions after himself.

In a post on social media platform X, Soyombo highlighted at least six major facilities that have been named or renamed after the president in just two years in office—a move he suggests reveals a troubling obsession with self-immortalisation.

According to Soyombo, the following facilities now bear Tinubu’s name:

  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, Abuja
  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC), Abuja
  • Bola Tinubu Polytechnic, Abuja
  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, Abuja
  • The National Assembly Library, now renamed Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building
  • The International Conference Centre (ICC), now Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre

Tinubu’s obsession with self-immortalisation will only last as long as his legacy of service.

“If this trend continues, Tinubu would have named at least 24 public facilities after himself by the end of a potential second term,” Soyombo noted.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if APC is rebranded as Bola Tinubu Progressives Congress (BTPC).”

The journalist warned that naming sprees do not guarantee enduring legacies, especially if public service delivery does not meet expectations.

“No matter how many buildings bear his name, the public will forget him quickly if the quality of governance remains poor. And all it would take is a determined successor to reverse the renaming spree,” he added.
