President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, issued a firm warning on Tuesday. According to him, groups that oppose Nigeria’s progress are collaborating to unseat the president.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Onanuga described what he called a deliberate scheme aimed at reversing the gains of recent government reforms.

“The Tinubu administration faces opposition from people who do not want this country to move forward,” he stated.

He praised the Tinubu administration as “the most focused and transformative in Nigeria’s history.” Onanuga noted that recent policy actions are beginning to reshape the country’s direction.

He highlighted economic restructuring, financial discipline and a new tone in governance as core elements of this shift.

This is not the first time concern has been raised about the depth of reforms initiated by President Tinubu. In fact, Onanuga referenced a statement made by the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, back in 2022.

Sanusi had cautioned Nigerians against expecting miracles from any serious reform agenda. “Emir Sanusi warned Nigerians what to expect from President Tinubu’s reforms.

‘It’s not going to be easy.’ If anybody tells you it would be easy, don’t vote for him,” Onanuga wrote.

This quote has now resurfaced as Nigerians grapple with fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms and the rising cost of living.

These decisions have drawn both praise and criticism, even from within Tinubu’s traditional support base.

Still, Onanuga believes these policies are necessary. He insists the long-term gains outweigh the short-term discomforts.

Beyond economic matters, however, the real threat appears to be political. Onanuga claimed that anti-government actors are not merely critics but plotters.

“Haters of Nigeria’s progress are banding together to overthrow an administration that has been the most focused, most transformative in our history,” he said.

This alleged movement comes as the African Democratic Congress begins forming a new political alliance. The group’s stated goal is to contest and defeat Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

While this is part of any democratic process, Onanuga argues that the intentions behind the move go beyond standard opposition politics.

He suggested that these forces are attempting to destabilise not just the presidency, but the entire structure of reform itself.

“It’s a dangerous agenda driven by those who failed in the past,” one senior government official told this reporter on condition of anonymity.

Still, some political observers say the government should welcome scrutiny rather than fear it. “In any democracy, opposition is necessary.

What matters is whether the government stays focused on delivering results,” said Lagos-based analyst Femi Adebayo.

Public opinion remains divided. While some citizens appreciate the current administration’s openness and reform initiatives, others express frustration with economic hardship.

Yet in the middle of this political storm, the government insists it will not lose focus.

“The Tinubu administration faces opposition, but it also enjoys growing support from Nigerians who understand the long game,” Onanuga stated.

Whether these tensions evolve into a broader national crisis or remain part of routine politics will depend on how both sides conduct themselves in the coming months.
