Anglican Church political guidelines aim to protect Christian worship from partisanship, banning political speeches and propaganda during services and programmes

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has released new Anglican Church political guidelines to regulate how politicians and officials are received during services.

The move follows rising concerns over the misuse of church gatherings for political speeches and campaigns.

Most Revd Henry Ndukuba, the Church’s Primate, announced the directive during the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu.

In a supporting memo issued on Friday by the Director of Communication, Korede Akintunde, the Church stressed the need to maintain the neutrality and sanctity of worship.

The memo stated that while the church welcomes everyone, including government figures, it must not be turned into a platform for political propaganda or endorsements.

Guests wishing to speak must seek prior approval and adhere to strict non-partisan guidelines.

“Guests are to be informed clearly that the church is not a platform for advancing partisan views or political propaganda,” the memo read.

Church leaders were warned against praising politicians in ways that may bring the church into disrepute. The use of the lectern, consecrated for reading the Bible, is also restricted to avoid symbolic misuse.

Ndukuba reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting leaders with prayer and counsel, but insisted worship must remain sacred and undivided by politics.
