Ijebu markets temporarily closed

Ijebu markets temporarily closed from July 14 to honour late monarch Oba Sikiru Adetona, as local authorities mourn the revered Awujale of Ijebuland

Ijebu markets temporarily closed following the death of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona CFR, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

The Ijebu Ode Local Government announced the closure as a mark of deep respect and cultural observance in honour of the revered monarch.

According to a public statement issued by Hon. Dare Alebiosu, Executive Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, all major markets in the local government area will be shut from Monday, 14 July 2025.

The affected markets include Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje—three of the busiest commercial centres in the region.

“This closure is in line with our cultural traditions and to allow all sons and daughters of Ijebuland the space to mourn this monumental loss,” the statement read.

Ijebu markets temporarily closed in reflection of the profound impact the late Oba Adetona had on his people.

His reign, which began in 1960 and spanned 65 years, is widely regarded as one of the most influential in Nigeria’s traditional and socio-political history.

The closure, though temporary, is symbolic of the unity and reverence the people of Ijebuland maintain for their customs.

It also underscores the respect commanded by the late monarch, whose leadership defined modern traditional governance and championed cultural identity.

This closure is in line with our cultural traditions and to allow all sons and daughters of Ijebuland the space to mourn this monumental loss.

Market activities will resume at a later date, yet to be determined, as the local government consults with traditional authorities on appropriate mourning protocols.

Residents and traders are advised to remain patient and adhere to the directive peacefully.

Ijebu markets temporarily closed in a move that is expected to significantly affect commerce in the area, particularly for small businesses that rely on daily trade.

However, community members have expressed understanding of the importance of honouring the revered royal figure.

“We urge all traders and residents to comply peacefully and respectfully,” the chairman said.

“This is a period of solemn reflection for all Ijebu sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora.”

The death of Oba Adetona has triggered a wave of tributes from political leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural institutions across Nigeria.

From his early ascension to the throne in his twenties to his legacy as a moderniser of Ijebuland, the late monarch remained a respected voice in national matters.

His stewardship of the annual Ojude Oba festival transformed it into an international cultural spectacle. Under his reign, Ijebuland became known for its organised leadership, communal development, and vibrant traditions.

Ijebu markets temporarily closed until the appropriate period of mourning has been observed, allowing residents to participate in rites and ceremonies that honour their late king.

While commercial activities will inevitably be impacted, the decision has received widespread approval as a rightful tribute to the late monarch’s towering legacy.
