US Embassy Nigeria closure set for July 15, 2025, to observe holiday honouring ex-President Buhari. Visa appointments will be rescheduled, officials confirm

The closure was confirmed on Monday through an official statement posted on the U.S. Mission in Nigeria’s X account.

“All visa appointments slated for July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled,” the embassy said, adding that affected applicants will receive new appointment dates.

Normal operations are expected to resume following the holiday.

The Nigerian government announced the public holiday to commemorate Buhari, who passed away on July 13 in London at the age of 82.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, and as military head of state from 1983 to 1985.

He was known for his anti-corruption stance and firm security policies during his time in office.

In a show of solidarity, the U.S. Embassy acknowledged the significance of the national mourning and joined Nigerians in paying respects.

A diplomatic staff member said, “This gesture honours Nigeria’s national moment of remembrance and respects the legacy of the late leader.”

Flags across the country will continue to fly at half-mast for the seven-day mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
