Peter Obi donations defended amid South-East bias allegations

Peter Obi donations have come under public scrutiny following claims that his recent charitable efforts disproportionately favoured Nigeria’s South-East

A report by StatisSense, a data analytics platform, showed Obi donated ₦540 million between January and July 2025, with ₦415 million over 75% going to the South-East.

Notably, Anambra and Enugu alone received ₦260 million and ₦120 millio, respectively.

The figures sparked online debate, especially as the South-West received no reported donations during the period.

However, Dr Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, dismissed suggestions of ethnic bias.

He clarified that Obi’s donations are personal, ongoing gestures, not tied to politics or regional loyalty.

“These donations are personal… don’t be surprised that eventually the donation may come from the North and supersede that of the South,” Tanko said.

The Labour Party leader’s philanthropic footprint includes health and education institutions across five geopolitical zones from IHM Health System, Anambra (₦100m) to Joseph D. Bagobiri College, Kafanchan (₦20m) and UNICAL Faculty of Dentistry (₦20m).

Tanko challenged critics to demand transparency from other political figures:

“If there’s any other candidate that has done that in his personal capacity, bring us the data,” he said.

Obi’s camp emphasized that his philanthropy will continue to cut across regions, rejecting attempts to politicize generosity.
