Lagos lawmaker Desmond Elliot issues a public apology to Femi Gbajabiamila following reports of his involvement in an impeachment plot against Speaker Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Surulere Constituency I, Desmond Elliot, has publicly apologised to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, over his alleged involvement in a plot to impeach the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa. Speaking during a live broadcast in Lagos on Friday, May 15, 2026, the lawmaker sought to mend a fractured relationship with his long-term political mentor following revelations that nearly cost the Chief of Staff his position in the presidency.

The friction between the two politicians intensified after Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had confronted him with intelligence reports regarding the loyalty of his proteges.

The Chief of Staff admitted he initially defended the lawmaker against the President’s claims until the Department of State Services provided evidence affirming the involvement of Desmond Elliot in the legislative maneuverings against the Speaker.

Appearing on the popular television programme Your View, the veteran actor turned politician adopted a humble posture to address what has become a scandalous chapter in his political career.

The Desmond Elliot apology was punctuated by traditional expressions of respect as he referred to the Chief of Staff as his father and mentor, acknowledging that he had learnt the entirety of his political craft under the tutelage of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

During the emotional interview, the lawmaker described the situation as a human error and pleaded for divine forgiveness from his benefactor.

He noted that despite the media scrutiny and the inevitable backlash from the public, he felt it was necessary to express his regret openly rather than behind closed doors.

Beyond the immediate reconciliation, the lawmaker utilised the platform to signal his intention to seek a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He pointed to his legislative scorecard in Surulere as a testament to his commitment to the constituency, vowing to remain loyal to the party hierarchy.

The dramatic turn of events highlights the high-stakes nature of Lagos politics, where personal loyalty often dictates the trajectory of one’s career.

Whether this public show of contrition will be enough to restore the trust of the presidency remains to be seen as the state prepares for the next electoral cycle.
