The program, held at Dutse General Hospital from August 14 to 15, 2025, aimed to improve eye health and quality of life for those affected by cataracts.

Nasiru Abubakar, coordinator of the Ophthalmic Department at the hospital, reported that 86 patients were treated on the first day, receiving surgeries and glasses to enhance vision.

He urged patients to adhere to post-operation instructions to ensure smooth recovery and prevent complications.

Cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for about 51% of global cases, with over 18 million people affected.

In Jigawa State alone, thousands live with cataracts, and the government’s initiative seeks to address this pressing health challenge.

Patients expressed heartfelt gratitude for the intervention. Bashari Lawan said, “We appreciate the governor’s care towards our eye health.”

Similarly, 65-year-old Aminatu Sani shared that the surgery restored her independence and daily functionality.
