West Ham Sign Fernandes in £40m deal from Southampton. The Portuguese midfielder aims to help the Premier League side climb from the bottom of the table

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, signed from Southampton for a reported £40 million, has penned a five-year contract with the East London club.

The Hammers confirmed the deal on Friday, just two days after crashing out of the English League Cup and sitting rock bottom in the Premier League table with two losses in two matches.

“It’s a big step for me. It’s a massive club,” Fernandes said.

“The stadium, the city, the project everything excites me.”

The midfielder, who gained Premier League experience with Southampton before their relegation last season, emphasized his desire to bring creativity and effort to his new team.

West Ham manager Graham Potter, under pressure to turn things around, described Fernandes as a player who brings “a different dimension” to his evolving squad.

“Mateus is a young talent with great maturity and character,” Potter said.

“He’ll help us build something meaningful.”

The move aligns with Potter’s emphasis on rebuilding with youth, particularly after losing key midfield figures and enduring a shaky start to the campaign.

Fernandes’ arrival is seen as more than a future investment he is expected to make an immediate impact.

With Nottingham Forest next on the fixture list, fans hope the new signing can inject creativity, composure, and control into a midfield that has lacked rhythm.

The reported £40m fee underscores West Ham’s belief in Fernandes’ potential, despite his team’s relegation last season.

He was one of Southampton’s few bright spots, admired for his ball retention, passing range, and tactical discipline.
