FAAN launches tap-to-pay system at Lagos and Abuja airports, enabling faster, cashless entry through a partnership with Paystack

FAAN Tap-to-Pay has officially launched in Lagos and Abuja, marking a major step toward cashless, contactless operations at Nigeria’s busiest airports.

Introduced on August 28 under the initiative Operation Go Cashless, the new system enables drivers to pay gate access fees simply by tapping a prepaid NFC card, eliminating cash delays and improving the overall travel experience.

With the FAAN Tap-to-Pay system, once a driver taps the card, the correct gate fee is instantly deducted, and the barrier opens — ensuring quicker access and reducing congestion.

This innovation, developed in partnership with Paystack, aims to enhance safety, transparency, and operational efficiency at airport terminals.

“We’re modernizing airport access to make the entire experience seamless for travelers and transporters,” said FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku.

Drivers can register and begin using the system in a few simple steps:

  • Scan a QR code at the airport or visit the [FAAN website](https://www.faan.gov.ng)
  • Register a phone number and verify with a one-time password (OTP)
  • Deposit a minimum of ₦1,000 into a linked virtual wallet
  • Link a prepaid NFC card for quick, tap-to-pay access

While the system is currently active at Lagos and Abuja airports, FAAN plans to roll it out across all Nigerian airports before the end of 2025.

The move is part of a broader digital transformation strategy, which includes digitizing:

  • Parking and toll payments
  • Lease and vendor agreements
  • Non-aeronautical revenue channels

Currently, only 8% of FAAN’s income comes from non-flight-related sources. With initiatives like this, the agency hopes to boost revenue diversification and long-term financial sustainability.

As FAAN’s fintech partner, Paystack provides the backend systems, including:

  • Real-time transaction processing
  • Secure contactless terminals
  • Customer support and wallet integration

The collaboration is expected to drastically reduce cash dependence, improve audit trails, and speed up entry for thousands of airport users daily.

“This is not just a payment system — it’s a leap forward for Nigeria’s airport infrastructure,” a Paystack spokesperson noted.
