Two people were seriously injured and three others rescued in separate traffic accidents in Mile 2 and Surulere, Lagos, over the weekend, caused by speeding and brake failure, LASTMA reports

LAGOS, Nigeria – At least two people sustained serious injuries, while three others were rescued unhurt in two separate traffic accidents in Mile 2 and Surulere, Lagos State, over the weekend, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the crashes were attributed to reckless driving and mechanical failure, particularly brake failure.

The first incident occurred at Olohunsogo Bus Stop, inbound Mile 2, when a Toyota Camry collided with a stationary Scania truck.

“Preliminary enquiries revealed that the ghastly incident was precipitated by the Camry driver’s reckless indulgence in excessive speeding, which ultimately resulted in the fatal loss of vehicular control,” the LASTMA statement read.

The driver and one passenger in the Camry sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Ademola Hospital opposite Ijanikin Police Station by emergency responders.

Police officers from the Ijanikin Division provided security backup, while LASTMA officials took the truck driver into custody for questioning.

In another crash reported within the Surulere area, LASTMA confirmed brake failure as the cause but did not specify the number of vehicles or individuals involved beyond stating that three people were rescued uninjured.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, used the incidents to reiterate the dangers of reckless driving and lack of vehicle maintenance:

“Excessive speeding and mechanical negligence remain wholly avoidable precursors to tragic road disasters,” Bakare-Oki warned.

He urged all motorists to observe speed limits, avoid distractions, and conduct regular vehicle inspections, particularly brake systems and tire conditions.

These accidents come barely a week after a fatal crash in Ibeju-Lekki, where six people, including a child, lost their lives on the Lekki–Epe Expressway.

Nine others were injured in that incident, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.
