Super Eagles World Cup hopes fade after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Free State, leaving Nigeria’s 2026 qualification chances slim but alive

Super Eagles World Cup hopes suffered a major blow on Tuesday after Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium.

Nigeria’s fragile campaign remains on the edge, with the team stuck on 11 points level with Benin Republic and trailing leaders South Africa by six points with only two matches to play.

The hosts took the lead when William Ekong diverted Nkota’s cross into his own net, silencing the away fans. But just before halftime, Nigeria found a response.

Ademola Lookman sparked the move, Moses Simon whipped in a fine delivery, and Calvin Bassey powered home a header though replays suggested the ball brushed his arm. With no VAR, the equaliser stood.

Despite flashes of promise, Nigeria could not find a winner. The result now leaves qualification mathematically possible but highly improbable.

For the Super Eagles to book a place in the 2026 World Cup, they must:

  • Beat both Lesotho and Benin to finish on 17 points.
  • Hope South Africa lose their final two matches, also finishing on 17.
  • Overturn Bafana Bafana’s superior goal difference in the tiebreak.

South Africa, meanwhile, remain in pole position and are now favourites to top Group C. FIFA had earlier noted they would have sealed automatic qualification with a victory over Nigeria combined with a Benin slip.

As it stands, Nigeria’s path to North America is narrow demanding perfection in their remaining fixtures and a collapse from South Africa.
