Wayne Rooney on Manchester United slams team’s decline under Amorim

Former captain criticises current manager’s impact amid defeats

Wayne Rooney on Manchester United says the team has worsened under Ruben Amorim after recent heavy defeats, raising concerns over the club’s direction

Wayne Rooney on Manchester United has delivered a blunt verdict, asserting that the team has “got worse” since Ruben Amorim took charge as manager.

The former Manchester United captain and record goalscorer voiced his frustrations following the club’s humiliating 3-0 defeat to city rivals Manchester City.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds, Rooney, who scored 253 goals for the Red Devils, said it was hard to find any signs of progress under Amorim, who was appointed in November last year after Erik ten Hag’s departure.

“I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be of the manager and the players,” Rooney said. “But it is tough to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we’re seeing things that will get results soon. We’re seeing none of that, and it is very difficult.”

Rooney pointed to the disheartening sight of fans leaving the Etihad Stadium long before the final whistle as a telling sign of growing dissatisfaction. “You could hear the fans singing Amorim’s name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game. You know the game is over, and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing.”

The club’s current position starkly contrasts its storied past. United finished 15th last season, their lowest league finish since 1989–90, and amassed their fewest top-flight points since 1973–74.

Despite investing nearly £250 million in new signings and adopting a revamped 3-4-3 formation favoured by Amorim, results remain bleak.

Rooney emphasised the stagnation, if not regression, of the team’s fortunes. “If the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse,” he said.

With the pressure mounting on Amorim to reverse this downward trajectory, fans and pundits alike are left questioning the club’s future direction.
