Egungun Ajomogbodo Documentary by Ayankola Ayanwuyi has screened globally, including at Stanford University, spotlighting Yoruba cultural heritage

Egungun Ajomogbodo Documentary by Nigerian author, cultural educator and filmmaker Ayankola Ayanwuyi has continued to win international attention, with screenings across multiple continents, including a feature at Stanford University.

The short film, titled Space-Sitting Prowess of Egungun Ajomogbodo, was released in 2022 as an educational piece to enlighten audiences about the significance of Egungun within Yoruba culture.

According to Ayanwuyi, the documentary was never intended to go beyond its original purpose of cultural education, but its resonance has carried it into global spaces.

“When I produced Space-Sitting Prowess of Egungun Ajomogbodo in 2022, I simply wanted to educate people on the subject of Egungun in Yoruba culture.

I never imagined it would travel this far or be showcased at international film festivals,” he said.

Despite having moved on to other creative projects by 2023, the documentary continued its journey, appearing in film festivals around the world and strengthening discourse on the place of traditional masquerade in Yoruba cultural identity.

Egungun, a deeply symbolic aspect of Yoruba cosmology, embodies ancestral presence, spirituality and performance artistry.

Through the lens of Egungun Ajomogbodo, Ayanwuyi not only preserves but also shares this heritage with a global audience, situating Yoruba cultural expression within the wider conversation on indigenous traditions and identity.
