Dr Dípò Awójídé condemns fake drinks and calls for tougher regulation, urging NAFDAC and SON to act decisively to protect public health

Dr Dípò Awójídé has intensified campaign against fake drinks after he publicly denounced the proliferation of counterfeit beverages and medicines, urging Nigeria’s regulators to clamp down hard on the trade.

He insisted that criminals who peddle fake drinks and consumables; especially those targeting children, pose a serious threat to national health and should face severe consequences.

In a post on his social media account, Awójídé appealed to NAFDAC and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to step up enforcement.

He blamed their weak action for enabling widespread circulation of dangerous products linked to kidney failure, cancer and other illnesses.

He urged consumers to destroy bottles of suspicious brands like Casamingos, Glen CRU, Martell, Jack Daniels, Jameson, Hennessy or Macallan once they finish consumption, as a measure to hamper counterfeiters.

Awójídé’s message carried urgency: these fake drinks manufacturers, he said, are “out to kill you and make your family miserable.”

He also warned that social media censorship could be at play and urged users to share the post widely.

While some praised his bold stance, others cautioned against calls for vigilante justice.

Legal experts emphasise that enforcement must remain within the bounds of due process to avoid dangerous precedents.
