WhatsApp username feature

WhatsApp username feature lets users connect without phone numbers, marking a major privacy shift as the app tests its biggest update yet

WhatsApp username feature is being tested in what could become one of the most significant privacy updates in the platform’s history.

The new function, currently in beta testing, will allow users to connect through unique usernames instead of phone numbers, giving them more control over their personal information.

According to reports, the feature mirrors tools already popular on platforms like Instagram, Telegram, and X, where users interact through handles rather than personal contact details.

This marks a powerful step toward enhancing privacy for WhatsApp’s more than two billion users worldwide.

Leaked screenshots from WhatsApp’s beta programme show a new “Username” field in user profiles, allowing people to create distinct identifiers while hiding their phone numbers if they choose.

The update aims to reduce the discomfort often felt when sharing numbers in large groups, community forums, or business chats a setting where many users have long desired more discretion.

However, experts warn that the new system could bring challenges such as username squatting and impersonation, similar to issues seen on other social platforms.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on verification tools to curb misuse and ensure authenticity.

While the feature is still in its testing phase, it represents a potential transformation in how users interact on the messaging giant.

If successfully implemented, it could make WhatsApp less about numbers and more about names, reshaping the app’s identity and privacy landscape.
