Tokunbo Wahab orders strict enforcement on illegal land reclamation in Lagos after a seven-day grace period ends, warning operators of prosecution

Tokunbo Wahab has ordered full enforcement against individuals, developers, and organisations engaged in illegal land reclamation and waterfront encroachment across Lagos State.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources said the decision follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued through public notices published on 18 and 19 September 2025 in The Punch and The Nation newspapers.

Wahab announced that from Wednesday, 15 October 2025, the ministry will begin strict enforcement of the law in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017 and other relevant regulations.

According to him, the measures will include the removal of all illegal reclamation structures and fillings without statutory Environmental Impact Assessments and Drainage Clearance Certificates.

The government will also seize reclamation equipment and materials found on prohibited sites and prosecute offenders under environmental and urban development laws.

He explained that the crackdown is essential to protect the environment, prevent flooding, and ensure public safety across the state.

Wahab further warned members of the public against patronising illegal reclamation operators or buying land from them, stressing that such actions could lead to severe legal and financial consequences.

In a firm message to violators, he declared, “Enough is enough,” reaffirming the state’s resolve to safeguard its coastal zones and restore environmental integrity.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to sustainable land use and responsible urban development while urging compliance from all stakeholders.
