Douye Diri resigns from PDP in shock political twist

Douye Diri resigns from PDP, shocking the political landscape as Bayelsa lawmakers follow suit. His next move remains unconfirmed

Douye Diri resigns from PDP in what many are calling one of the most significant political shake-ups in Bayelsa State’s recent history.

The Governor’s sudden departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has triggered a wave of resignations within the state government, including that of the Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP lawmakers.

The dramatic announcement was made during Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting held in Yenagoa. Sources within Government House confirmed that Diri has submitted a formal resignation letter to the party.

Although speculation has long swirled around the governor’s rumoured leanings towards the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has yet to declare his new political destination.

Governor Diri’s resignation comes just under a year after he was re-elected for a second term, and it marks a stunning shift in the state’s political alignment.

His exit from the PDP, a party that has long dominated Bayelsa politics, signals possible upheaval ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Daniel Alabrah, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, initially confirmed the development via a brief Facebook post, although he declined to elaborate when contacted directly, stating, “I cannot talk now.” Attempts to reach the PDP state chairman, Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

This latest development casts a spotlight on the internal cracks within the PDP, especially at the state level.

It also highlights Diri’s growing political capital and possible ambition to reposition himself ahead of a future national role.

Analysts say the timing and execution of the mass resignations suggest a carefully calculated exit.

Observers believe the move may unsettle PDP’s national leadership, as it comes amid recent defections in other states.

For now, the people of Bayelsa—and indeed the country—await to see where Douye Diri lands politically. One thing is certain: his next step will be watched closely.
