Matthew Kuti ITTF Africa Championships breakthrough sees 14-year-old named Most Improved Player after stellar run and top 200 world debut

The honour marks a breakthrough year for Kuti, who surged into the world’s top 200 in October and helped Nigeria reach the semi-finals of the prestigious continental tournament.

Announcing the award, ITTF Africa praised Kuti for his standout performances and rising influence in African table tennis.

“Congratulations to Kuti Matthew — named @ethiopian_holidays Most Improved Player of the tournament,” the federation said.

The teenager, already the reigning West Africa Regional Champion, stood out with his consistency and maturity far beyond his years.

A right-handed, shakehand-attacking player, Kuti finished the season with 42 wins in 62 matches across 10 international events, amassing 4,282 points and establishing himself as one of Africa’s brightest young prospects.

He claimed his first major senior title earlier in the year at the West African Regional Championships in Lagos, outplaying more experienced opponents.

In Tunis, he maintained his form by defeating Togo’s Sedik Tchagole and Ivory Coast’s Jean Pierre Bayala, before narrowly losing to Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali, one of the continent’s most established stars.

Kuti also impressed in mixed doubles, partnering Ajoke Ojomu in a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over Algeria’s Jade Morice and Mehdi Bollousa, overturning a 0–2 deficit.

Kuti’s recognition came as part of a broader Nigerian effort.

The men’s team received the STAG Fair Play Award after offering to switch jerseys for Morocco during their group match—despite winning the coin toss—so their opponents could meet kit regulations.

Nigeria’s men and women teams also secured qualification for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships in London, finishing among the top four.

Though yet to claim a senior WTT title, Kuti’s rapid progress and reputation continue to rise.

Since making his senior debut at the 2023 African Games in Accra, he has competed in 20 international events, recording 89 wins from 120 matches.

His emergence provides a fresh spark in Nigeria’s quest to reclaim its dominant legacy once held by the likes of Segun Toriola and carried forward by Quadri Aruna.

With growing global recognition and invaluable experience already under his belt, Matthew Kuti ITTF Africa Championships success hints at an even more promising future for Nigeria’s table tennis landscape.
