Nigeria joins Africa’s visa-free travel drive as nations remove border restrictions to boost trade, tourism, and continental unity

Nigeria has joined a growing wave of African nations advocating for easier cross-border movement, as several countries on the continent lift travel restrictions to open their borders to fellow Africans.

The move marks a powerful step towards regional integration and cooperation.

The new visa-free travel push aims to deepen economic partnerships, expand tourism opportunities, and strengthen the shared vision of a united and borderless Africa.

While many African nations still require entry permits, a steadily increasing number are adopting open-border policies that allow Africans, including Nigerians, to travel more freely.

Seychelles remains one of the continent’s pioneers in open travel. The island nation has maintained a long-standing visa-free policy for all visitors, welcoming every African national without restriction — a strategy that supports its tourism-driven economy.

In The Gambia, the government officially declared the country visa-free for all Africans in 2019, a move aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and continental unity.

Citizens from Commonwealth and EU countries also benefit from this open-door approach, positioning The Gambia as a vital West African gateway.

Neighbouring Benin followed the same year, when President Patrice Talon abolished visa requirements for Africans in a landmark decision to strengthen regional cooperation and encourage investment.

In East Africa, Kenya implemented its visa-free policy for Africans at the end of 2023, following President William Ruto’s announcement that the nation would open its doors to the entire continent.

The initiative underscores Kenya’s ambition to become a hub for trade and connectivity across Africa.

Similarly, Rwanda introduced full visa-free entry for Africans in November 2023.

President Paul Kagame’s declaration positioned Rwanda as a leader in regional integration, aligning openness with its reputation for safety, innovation, and hospitality.

The growing list of visa-free destinations reflects Africa’s determination to enhance mobility and cooperation across borders.

As more nations follow suit, the Nigeria-backed movement for unrestricted intra-African travel could transform trade, tourism, and shared prosperity on the continent.
