Manchester City vs Liverpool: Haaland, Gonzalez and Doku score as Pep Guardiola marks his 1000th match with a dominant 3–0 Premier League win

Manchester City vs Liverpool ended in emphatic fashion on Sunday as Pep Guardiola celebrated his 1000th game in management with a commanding 3–0 victory, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to four points.

Erling Haaland missed an early penalty but made amends with his 99th Premier League goal, before Nico Gonzalez’s deflected strike and a stunning effort from Jeremy Doku completed a statement win for the champions.

Liverpool, who have now lost four of their last five league games, slipped to eighth place and find themselves eight points adrift of the summit—an alarming slide for a side that once looked like genuine contenders.

Arsenal’s ten-match winning run came to an end with a 2–2 draw at Sunderland on Saturday, giving City the chance to close the gap—and Guardiola’s men seized it in ruthless fashion.

Despite some contentious officiating, Arne Slot’s Liverpool looked far from the confident outfit that cruised to a 2–0 victory at the Etihad back in February.

Their recent wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid proved no preparation for City’s intensity and precision.

City’s dominance began early when Doku was fouled by Giorgi Mamardashvili after a chaotic sequence involving Ibrahima Konaté and Conor Bradley.

Though the referee initially waved play on, a VAR review awarded a penalty.

Haaland’s low effort was superbly saved by Mamardashvili, denying the Norwegian his first goal from the spot for City.

But the striker soon made amends, rising to meet Matheus Nunes’ teasing cross with a looping header to open the scoring on 29 minutes.

Liverpool thought they had equalised nine minutes later when Virgil van Dijk’s header found the corner, only for Andy Robertson to be adjudged offside for interfering with play.

Moments later, City punished Liverpool’s lapse in concentration. From a poorly cleared corner, Gonzalez’s shot deflected off Van Dijk, wrong-footing Mamardashvili for 2–0.

Liverpool’s best chance to respond came early in the second half when Cody Gakpo blazed over from close range after fine work from Mohamed Salah and Bradley. It proved costly.

Doku, electric throughout, crowned his display with a breathtaking solo strike—cutting inside Konaté before curling into the top corner to make it 3–0.

Salah summed up Liverpool’s frustrations by missing a gilt-edged chance late on, while £125 million striker Alexander Isak remained unused on the bench amid fitness concerns.

Slot’s decision to overhaul his title-winning squad with a £450 million summer rebuild is increasingly under scrutiny as Liverpool drift from the title picture into a battle merely for a top-four finish.

For Guardiola, however, it was a fitting milestone—a masterclass in control, precision, and attacking purpose that reaffirmed City’s status as Arsenal’s closest challengers.
