Olympic transgender ban expected for 2028 games

Blanket restriction could reshape female competition categories

Olympic transgender ban is expected for 2028, with discussions ongoing about rules for DSD athletes after Paris 2024 boxing controversy

The Olympic transgender ban is strongly expected to be in place for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, though uncertainty remains over rules for athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) following the boxing controversies at Paris 2024.

Under current regulations, each sport may decide whether transgender women can compete if their testosterone levels remain below a specified threshold.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), led by new president Kirsty Coventry, is reportedly considering a sweeping policy change that would enforce a blanket ban across all sports.

Such a policy would prevent situations similar to Laurel Hubbard’s participation in weightlifting at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

Hubbard, who transitioned in 2012, became a flashpoint in debates over fairness in female categories.

Olympic insiders have indicated that while the move is the clear “direction of travel,” it is unlikely to take effect before the Winter Olympics in Italy next February.

Some reports suggested a formal announcement could come as early as February, but sources estimate it may take six months to a year to fully approve and implement.

For Coventry, the policy shift would mark a significant milestone, aligning with her campaign focus on safeguarding female categories during her bid for the IOC presidency.
