Wunmi Aloba name dispute intensifies as Mohbad’s widow defies family order, citing legal rights while awaiting court-ordered DNA test

The Wunmi Aloba name dispute has intensified as Omowunmi, widow of the late Afrobeats singer Mohbad, publicly defied a family directive instructing her to cease using the Aloba surname pending a DNA test.

The Aloba family, led by Mohbad’s father Joseph Aloba and head Omolayo Aloba, argued that no statutory or customary marriage was completed, citing the absence of Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price.

They demanded that Omowunmi stop using the surname in both public and private records.

In a direct response, Omowunmi added ‘Aloba’ to her name in an Instagram story on Thursday, November 13, stating, “Please patronize Wunmi Aloba oo, Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of,” referencing her son with the late singer.

The Aloba family also appointed three administrators—Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba—to manage Mohbad’s estate, royalties, and intellectual property.

They clarified that recognition of both mother and child within the estate would depend on DNA confirmation that Mohbad is Liam’s biological father.

Speaking on behalf of Omowunmi, lawyer Kabir Akingbolu condemned the family’s directive as illegal and sentimental.

He cited legal precedent affirming a person’s right to a surname, referencing the Supreme Court case of Ojukwu vs Ojukwu.

“Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. That is the name given to her by her husband, and under the law, she has every right to keep it,” Akingbolu said.

He also suggested that the family is avoiding the DNA test, adding, “We have always been ready — even if it’s today or tomorrow, we’ll be there.”
