Kebbi school abduction: Two girls’ escape sparks hope

Two girls escape amid the Kebbi School Abduction as security forces intensify a determined search for the remaining missing students

According to officials speaking on Tuesday, the Kebbi School Abduction has taken a dramatic turn after one of the missing schoolgirls escaped and returned home safely, intensifying national calls for urgent rescue efforts.

The confirmation followed a tense 24 hours after gunmen stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga before dawn on Monday.

Authorities say one student fled immediately during the attack, while the second escapee reached her family late the same evening.

School principal Musa Rabi Magaji stated that both girls are safe and receiving care.

A video verified by AP shows the teenagers reunited with family members in their village, offering a rare moment of relief amid the crisis.

The attack triggered a swift response from security forces. Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, ordered troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA to expand their search and rescue operations.

He demanded intelligence-driven actions and a relentless pursuit of the abductors, insisting that success is not optional.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris visited the school and vowed that the state would do everything possible to recover the remaining students.

Residents in Maga described the frightening moment gunfire erupted in the early hours.

Abdulkarim Abdullahi recalled hearing the shots from his home, noting that the attackers arrived on multiple motorcycles. For some families, the ordeal has been devastating.

Amina Hassan, the widow of the school’s vice principal Hassan Yakubu Makuku, recounted how gunmen entered their home and killed her husband after confirming his identity.

Later on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to console families and assure them that every effort is being deployed for the swift return of the missing girls.

Local authorities continue coordinating with federal security teams as the search expands across difficult terrain.

The incident highlights a worsening pattern of insecurity in northern Nigeria, where bandit groups frequently target schools, travellers, and rural communities.

As of Tuesday night, the remaining abducted schoolgirls are still unaccounted for, and security forces maintain a determined push to locate them.
