Aston Villa comeback lifts them to third in the Premier League as Liverpool draw 1-1 with Sunderland, highlighting inconsistent form

Aston Villa surged to third in the Premier League following a dramatic 4-3 victory over Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday, while Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Sunderland.

Brighton raced into a 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes through Jan Paul van Hecke and a Pau Torres own-goal.

Villa responded with two goals from Ollie Watkins before halftime, followed by a header from Amadou Onana and a strike from Donyell Malen to take a 4-2 lead.

Van Hecke’s second goal for Brighton set up a tense finale, but Villa held on for their eighth win in nine league matches.

At Anfield, Sunderland shocked Liverpool with a 67th-minute strike from Chemsdine Talbi after a loose pass by Virgil van Dijk.

Florian Wirtz rescued a point for the hosts with a deflected effort credited as an own-goal by Nordi Mukiele.

Sunderland nearly secured a historic first victory at Anfield since 1983, only for Wilson Isidor’s stoppage-time break to be cleared off the line by Federico Chiesa.

Elsewhere in the league, Wolves’ struggles continued as Igor Jesus’ header secured Nottingham Forest a 1-0 win at Molineux, moving the visitors three points clear of the relegation zone.

Burnley remain in the bottom three following Daniel Munoz’s 1-0 winner for Crystal Palace, who climbed to fifth place.
