Akpabio’s aide dismisses false health rumours, saying the Senate President is healthy and actively performing his official duties

Kenny Okolugbo, Consultant on Communications and Strategy to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the Senate President is ill. Speaking on Thursday in Abuja, Okolugbo described the claims as false and unfounded.

He made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, insisting that Senator Akpabio remains healthy and fully engaged in his official responsibilities.

“The Senate President is very healthy. You saw him; he’s been attending sessions, and that answers the question,” Okolugbo said.

The aide compared the reports to similar rumours previously spread about the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who was alleged to have been incapacitated but later appeared publicly to commission projects and participate in live broadcasts.

“Even Minister Wike was affected by similar rumours. One day they said he was in a coma or had suffered a stroke, and the next day he was commissioning projects and appeared on a live programme,” Okolugbo added.

He called for stronger regulation of social media platforms to curb the spread of misinformation, warning that unchecked false reporting poses a threat to public discourse.

“We must regulate social media. Everybody’s a publisher online, but they don’t seem to understand that the law prohibits sharing information you are not sure of,” he said.

The comments followed a report by SaharaReporters earlier in the week claiming that Senate President Akpabio had collapsed and was flown to London for medical treatment.

The report also alleged that his purported condition kept him away from official duties, including the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper interactive session held on Wednesday.
