Postgraduate students of English literature at Unilag demand inclusion in the January 2026 convocation list, citing administrative oversight

Stephen Chidi Onyenehidu, a postgraduate student of English Literature at the University of Lagos, has called on the university’s administration to include his cohort in the January 2026 convocation.

In a video statement shared on Tuesday, Onyenehidu said he was speaking on behalf of himself and fellow postgraduate students of the Faculty of Arts.

He described the omission of their names from the convocation list as a “grave concern” and requested urgent corrective action.

According to Onyenehidu, the students were initially unaware of the exclusion, prompting a visit to the university to verify their status.

He noted that some lecturers allegedly delayed submission of results, resulting in the postponement of their convocation.

“We have been preparing for this moment for months. Clothes have been sewn, family and friends invited, and financial arrangements made. To be told now that we will not convoke until January 2027 is heartbreaking,” Onyenehidu said.

The postgraduate students emphasised that they are full-time students and highlighted the personal and financial implications of the delay, including travel costs and academic planning. Onyenehidu called the explanation of “human error” inadequate and requested a formal apology from the university.

The statement directly addressed the integrity of Vice Chancellor Professor Fola Sade Tolulope Ogunshola, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Musa Obalola, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Akombe Mudashiru Ilupeju, urging them to take swift action to correct the convocation list.

Onyenehidu concluded by insisting that the students be allowed to convoke this month, asserting that updating the list is feasible and that their omission undermines the recognition of their academic efforts.
