An Accord Party lawmaker, Abiola Ibrahim, was also reportedly arrested as authorities investigate alleged movement of voters into Ikire

Police have reportedly arrested 146 suspected thugs and Accord Party member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiola Ibrahim, in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, amid heightened security surrounding Saturday’s governorship election.

The development was reported on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as voting commenced across Osun State, with the arrests reportedly linked to allegations that the 146 individuals were brought into the state to participate in the election.

According to a report by The Nation, Ibrahim, who represents the Irewole-Isoko Constituency, was arrested alongside the suspected voters and subsequently handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

The report said Ibrahim allegedly told the police during preliminary questioning that the 146 people had been brought into Ikire to vote for the Accord Party.

The allegation has not been established in court, and the identities, voting status and precise circumstances surrounding the movement of the individuals remain subject to investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged movement of the group and the polling units where they were reportedly expected to vote were not immediately clear.

The reported arrests come against a tense electoral backdrop in Osun, where political parties have intensified their mobilisation and security agencies have been placed under pressure to prevent intimidation, vote manipulation and violence.

The development is particularly significant given the wider concerns over alleged political thuggery and attempts to influence voters ahead of the governorship contest.

The police are expected to investigate whether the individuals committed any electoral offence and establish whether other people were involved in organising their movement.

The suspects are also expected to assist investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding their presence in Ikire and their alleged connection with the Accord Party.

The reported arrest of a serving state legislator alongside the group could further heighten political tensions as the election progresses.

Authorities have yet to publicly establish the full circumstances of the case or announce whether formal charges have been filed against Ibrahim or any of the 146 individuals.

The development underscores the delicate security environment surrounding the Osun election, where the credibility of the voting process depends not only on the deployment of electoral materials but also on ensuring that voters can participate without intimidation or unlawful interference.

As investigations continue, any allegations against the lawmaker and the other suspects will have to be tested through due process.
