US designates Muslim brotherhood chapters as terrorist groups

The US designates Muslim Brotherhood chapters as terrorist groups, targeting Lebanese, Egyptian, and Jordanian organisations over Hamas links

The United States government on January 14, 2026, in Washington, announced sweeping terrorist designations against Lebanese, Egyptian, and Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood chapters under President Donald Trump’s security directive.

In a joint action, the Department of State and the Department of the Treasury said the move followed Executive Order 14362, which targets Muslim Brotherhood chapters deemed a threat to United States national security.

The Department of State designated the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group.

The State Department also designated the group’s leader, Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

At the same time, the Department of the Treasury designated the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

According to the Treasury Department, both organisations provided material support to Hamas.

US authorities described the designations as the opening phase of a sustained and decisive campaign to disrupt Muslim Brotherhood networks involved in violence and regional destabilisation.

The statement said the United States would deploy all available tools to cut off funding, logistics, and operational capacity linked to the affected groups.

Officials stressed that the action reflects President Donald Trump’s commitment to eliminating extremist organisations that threaten American interests and allies.

The Department of State said further measures could follow as investigations into other Muslim Brotherhood-linked entities continue.
