FG denies tax laws pause as Taiwo Oyedele says implementation begins January 1, 2026, dismissing reports of uncertainty as false

The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed reports claiming it paused guidelines on new tax laws, with Mr Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, describing the headline as fake news.

Mr Oyedele clarified that the Federal Government has never announced a reversal or suspension of the new tax regime.

He stressed that both the Nigerian Tax Act and the Nigerian Tax Administration Act will take effect as scheduled on January 1, 2026.

The clarification followed the circulation of reports suggesting uncertainty over the laws’ implementation.

Those reports emerged after controversy surrounding alleged alterations to the gazetted versions of the legislation.

Concerns over the changes prompted the House of Representatives to call for a temporary suspension and investigation, raising public speculation about a possible delay.

Mr Oyedele explained that while minor discrepancies were observed in the gazetted documents, they do not affect the core provisions of the laws. He said the tax rate, tax burden, and overall framework remain intact.

He added that the implementation timeline is unchanged, reinforcing the government’s firm stance on tax reform as part of broader fiscal restructuring.
