Eyewitness alleges Shomolu police beat and pepper-sprayed teenagers outside a tutorial in Lagos, prompting outrage and video documentation by residents

Eyewitnesses allege that police officers from Alade Police Station in Shomolu, Yaba, assaulted a group of teenage students outside a tutorial centre late at night, sparking outrage among residents.

According to accounts, the teenagers had stepped out briefly to purchase items from a nearby shop that closes around 1:00–1:30 a.m.

They did not carry mobile phones or anything suspicious. Witnesses claim officers began harassing the boys without provocation and attempted to forcefully take them to the station.

The alleged attack reportedly involved beatings that left the teenagers close to losing consciousness, the use of pepper spray, and degrading acts, including one officer urinating on the victims.

The incident only de-escalated when one of the teenagers resisted and residents began recording videos of the confrontation.

Eyewitnesses added that the officers’ commander was present during the incident.

When residents intervened, the officers reportedly attempted to justify their actions without offering a clear explanation for the assault.

According to the eyewitness, the officers had been patrolling the area for three days prior, acting “as though they were replacing someone already in jail.”

The victims were attending a tutorial intended to support their education, raising concerns about police conduct and accountability in the neighbourhood.

The incident has sparked calls for investigation by local authorities and has reignited debates over police behaviour in Lagos State.
