The Olisa of Ijebu-Ode is summoned by Ogun Police over alleged bribery and financial inducement in the Awujale succession process

Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya, the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode, has been invited by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ogun State Police in Abeokuta over alleged bribery and financial inducement, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, February 4, 2026

The invitation, dated February 3 and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Gbenga Adeoye, requires Adesanya to appear at the CID headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, for a fact-finding interview.

The police emphasised that the inquiry is conducted under powers granted by Section 214 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 4(a) of the Police Act 2020, allowing the Olisa to attend with legal counsel.

The investigation reportedly concerns allegations that Adesanya sought to influence the selection of a candidate for the Awujale of Ijebuland stool through financial inducements or other pressures.

The Fusengbuwa ruling house previously warned that no political interference, intimidation, or monetary influence should affect the succession process, stressing that the revered stool’s appointment must strictly conform to age-old customs and traditions.

Police sources described the summons as part of ongoing efforts to maintain transparency and accountability within traditional institutions, signalling the state’s determination to uphold the integrity of leadership succession.

Observers noted that the development has drawn national attention, highlighting the delicate balance between customary authority and adherence to the rule of law in Ijebuland.
