SDP warns PDP

SDP warns PDP to avoid violence in Oyo State, calling for peaceful campaigns and responsible political conduct ahead of the 2027 elections

The Oyo State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has cautioned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against allowing political tensions to escalate into violence, following reports of an attack on the residence of former Deputy Governor Hazeem Gbolarumi during PDP congress activities on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Sunday, SDP State Chairman Michael Okunlade stressed the need to preserve Oyo State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Okunlade said the party learned of the alleged violence through media reports circulating on radio and social media. He urged all political parties to focus on campaign issues affecting residents rather than confrontational tactics.

“As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, we call on all political parties in Oyo State to centre their campaigns on meaningful discussions and policies that will benefit the people,” Okunlade said.

The SDP chairman specifically warned the PDP against actions that could destabilise the state’s peaceful atmosphere.

“We caution the PDP against turning the state into a battleground in the run-up to the 2027 elections. The party should coordinate its activities in the best interest of residents,” he added.

He further appealed to police and other security agencies to remain vigilant, preventing influential political actors from provoking unrest.

Okunlade emphasized that law enforcement authorities must closely monitor political groups, particularly as the next general elections approach.

Okunlade also reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to peace and unity, urging party members to remain disciplined and focused, while warning that acts of indiscipline would not be tolerated.

The statement highlights growing concern over political violence in Oyo State and underscores the need for responsible campaigning ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 electoral cycle.
