FG approves ₦100bn solar power programme for public institutions

Federal Government approves ₦100bn National Public Sector Solarization Initiative to power public institutions with renewable energy across Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved ₦100 billion for a new solar power project known as the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative (NPSSI) aimed at providing reliable electricity to government institutions across the country.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, disclosed this during a visit by Babatunde Adejumo to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Aliyu explained that the initiative will support government institutions facing persistent power shortages and rising electricity costs.

The programme forms part of Nigeria’s broader plan to expand electricity access through renewable energy.

He added that Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the ₦100 billion fund for the solarisation project, with the National Judicial Institute among the institutions expected to benefit.

According to the agency, the programme has already begun in several major government organisations, including:

  •  Department of State Services
  •  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
  •  Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission
  •  National Hospital Abuja
  •  Several universities and other educational institutions

Aliyu said the agency will first conduct an energy audit at the National Judicial Institute to determine the size of the solar mini-grid system required.

Once the audit is completed, the agency will determine the capacity of the solar system and the distribution network needed for installation.

Earlier, Adejumo emphasised that stable electricity is critical for judicial institutions, noting that modern legal training, research, and digital systems rely heavily on consistent power supply.
