Ogun govt to relocate Sango Tollgate motor park

Ogun State to relocate Sango Tollgate motor park and remove street trading to reduce frequent road accidents along the busy corridor

Ogun State Government has announced plans to relocate the illegal motor park and remove street trading at the Sango Tollgate area, in a move aimed at reducing frequent road accidents at the busy border with Lagos State.

State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, made the announcement on Friday during an inspection visit to the area with officials from the Ministry of Environment, Ogun State Waste Management Authority, and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.

Oresanya said the initiative followed a directive from Governor Dapo Abiodun, who expressed concern over the recurring loss of lives at the tollgate.

“I have the directive of the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who is worried and concerned about the incessant loss of lives, to investigate and find a lasting solution to the unfortunate and avoidable accidents at this tollgate,” Oresanya said.

After reviewing the situation with government officials and stakeholders, the commissioner confirmed that the state would relocate the motor park and eradicate street trading that has existed at the tollgate for more than two decades.

“After careful review of the situation on the ground with other government officials and stakeholders, the state government has decided to relocate the illegal motor park and eradicate street trading that has been in existence at the tollgate for the past twenty-five years to more recognised and better organised places far away from the area,” he said.

Oresanya explained that the congestion caused by interstate buses and traders around the tollgate has increased the risk of accidents along the corridor.

To prevent their return, the state government, in collaboration with local authorities, will construct barricades on both sides of the tollgate.

Officials of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority will carry out a comprehensive clean-up of the area, while environmental marshals and local government officials will monitor compliance.

The relocation and enforcement exercise is expected to begin within the next few days.

The governor had previously condemned reckless driving by truck operators along the Sango–Ota corridor following a fatal accident at the Ota Toll Gate area, which claimed seven lives.
