Benin Council Peller palace breach sparks sanctions threat, apology demand and probe into unauthorised palace entry

The Benin Traditional Council on Tuesday warned of possible sanctions against a palace queen following the unauthorised entry of streamer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly known as Peller, into the Oba of Benin’s palace.

In a statement issued by BTC Secretary Frank Irabor, the council described the incident as a serious breach of protocol and a violation of the sanctity of the revered institution.

The council said the Benin Council Peller palace breach stemmed from the influencer’s visit on March 6 during a nationwide tour, noting that although Peller was received by some palace officials, the process of entry failed to comply with established procedures.

According to the statement, the development amounts to a desecration of the palace, which serves as the ancient and spiritual seat of Oba Ewuare II.

The council stressed that the premises are governed by centuries of tradition and are not open for casual or content-driven visits.

The BTC disclosed that a palace queen alleged to have facilitated the visit is facing disciplinary proceedings that could lead to her removal, pending the outcome of internal deliberations.

Authorities have also directed Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs to provide a full account of the circumstances surrounding the visit.

The council warned that failure to comply would trigger legal action and require an unreserved written apology.

A preliminary investigation has already led to firm disciplinary measures.

A chief implicated in the breach has been placed on indefinite suspension, while a staff member, identified as Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the police and charged in court for allegedly aiding the unauthorised access.

Irabor said the council viewed the matter with utmost gravity, describing the incident as both embarrassing and disruptive to the peace within the palace grounds.

In a striking assertion of authority, the council maintained that it possesses the institutional capacity to enforce compliance and prevent any recurrence, underscoring its role as custodian of Benin’s cultural heritage.
