Qing Madi music earnings claim sparks debate after singer compares concert fees to Nigerian salaries and highlights industry wealth gap

Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, professionally known as Qing Madi, has ignited debate after making a striking comparison between music industry earnings and everyday salaries during a recent podcast interview in Lagos.

The 18-year-old Afro-R&B singer made the remarks on the Tea With Tay, hosted by media personality Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh, where she described the pace of income in the music business as almost unreal.

The Qing Madi music earnings claim centred on the disparity between what many Nigerians earn monthly and what artists can receive from a single performance.

Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma said that while some full-time workers earn about ₦500,000 a month, a musician could make as much as ₦20 million from one show.

When Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh jokingly likened such figures to “drug money,” Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma agreed, noting that the scale of difference is shocking.

The comment quickly gained traction online, fuelling conversations about income inequality and the rapid financial growth of Nigeria’s entertainment sector.

The discussion reflects a broader surge in wealth within the music industry, driven in part by global demand for Afrobeats and the expansion of digital streaming.

According to Spotify’s Loud and Clear report, Nigerian artists generated more than ₦60 billion in streaming revenue in 2025, with earnings rising sharply over recent years.

Industry data also indicates that Nigerian songs recorded over 30 billion streams in 2025, with billions of listening hours and a significant influx of first-time global listeners.

These figures underscore the growing international reach of the country’s music scene.

Beyond financial matters, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma offered a more reflective perspective, suggesting that music often serves as an emotional outlet in a society where access to mental health support remains limited.

She said many Nigerians continue working through difficult circumstances and turn to music for comfort.

The Qing Madi music earnings claim also highlighted a personal shift in her creative process.

With increased financial stability, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma said she now feels empowered to focus on authenticity rather than commercial pressure, aiming to create work with lasting value.

A defining moment in her career came in 2022 when her debut single “See Finish” went viral, propelling her into the spotlight and establishing her as one of the most promising voices in Nigeria’s Afro-R&B scene.
